Debaser is back this fall and winter with a series of captivating performances that feature radio art, Arabic and SWANA club music, modal traditions, and transcendent jazz-soul songwriting. Across these four unique events, audiences will experience the breadth of sonic experimentation and community-driven artistry.
On November 7, A Sonic Bridge at the Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre (CDCC — 355 Cooper St, Ottawa) brings together artist and author Paul Jasen with media and sound artist Florence-Delphine Roux. The evening explores the radical potential of analog radio, blending performance and theory in an immersive audiovisual experience. Presented in partnership with Carleton University Art Gallery (CUAG).
On November 14, New York/Montreal collective Laylit returns to Ottawa for an electrifying club night celebrating music from the Arab and SWANA region and its diaspora, and for the first time will take place at GRIDWRKS. Featuring a lineup of DJ-producers based in Montreal Om. El Beat, MNSA and Nadim Maghzal. Expect an unforgettable journey across Arabic pop, mahraganat, hip-hop, and experimental electronic sounds that keep the dance floor alive until late.
On November 15, Labyrinth Ensemble with featured performers Kelly Thoma and Ross Daly performs at Glebe St-James United Church, bringing modal and maqam traditions of the Mediterranean, West Asia, and South Asia into dialogue. The Toronto-based group’s improvisatory spirit and deep reverence for musical lineages promise an evening of rich, resonant beauty.
Finally, on December 5, Debaser presents Beverly Glenn-Copeland & Elizabeth Copeland live at the Bronson Centre, with support from Izzy Rose. A legendary singer, composer, and transgender activist, Glenn-Copeland bridges generations through a luminous blend of folk, jazz, ambient, and electronic music—soundscapes first explored on his groundbreaking albums Beverly Glenn-Copeland (1970) and Keyboard Fantasies (1986). This long-awaited Ottawa performance promises an evening of joy, transcendence, and deep connection.
This season’s lineup embodies Debaser’s continued commitment to boundary-pushing artistry and inclusive, community-driven programming. Find out more about each program and how to attend at the links below.
