3Phaz and SUBR صبر,

  • FONO HiFi Lounge 473 Bronson Avenue Ottawa, ON Canada (map)

On October 17 at FONO, Cairo electronic music fixture 3Phaz brings his experimental bass-driven take on Egyptian mahraganat/shaabi for an Ottawa debut live performance, supported by SUBR صبر, the deep-listening project of Lougien Dawoudiah and Pierre Richardson –– moving between experimental club and deep listening, deep bass and drone, finding each other in sonic experimentation.

3Phaz is a Cairo-based electronic producer mostly known for his debut album ‘Three Phase,’ an album that presented a powerful and fresh new take on Egyptian mahraganat/shaabi sound; the record was released on Egyptian label 100Copies in 2020. With further singles and remixes released on the likes of Rinse, Boomkat, Polaar, Nashazphone, and Irsh, 3Phaz quickly carved his way into the international club music scene allowing him to perform all around Europe. 3Phaz’s sophomore album ‘Ends Meet’ was released in Feb 2023 on Discrepant sub-label Souk followed by his EP ‘DramTraTrax’ released on Tratratrax in May 2023, both of which were featured in multiple end of year lists including Pitchfork, The Quietus, and Bandcamp to name a few.

SUBR صبر is a deep listening music project by artist duo: Lougien Dawoudiah and Pierre Richardson. Through a web of re-mapped DJ controllers and modular synthesizers, SUBR shares their study into the world of Arab sounds.

The name SUBR (صبر) is based on the Arabic word "sabir" meaning patience, persistence. The same word also means “cactus”. Resilient, thorny. Sometimes it flowers, sometimes it bears fruit. The prickly pears it produces are a signature offering of Palestinian land, and the plant has become a symbol of protection and boundary.

SUBR’s performances distill arabic music, media, and field recordings down to their bare elements, turning the sounds to instruments themselves, and playing them to compliment a background of deep drone.
